PRESS RELEASE
From prison to the Kunstkantine
ZwischenWelten presents an exhibition featuring four sub-projects with young offenders
Berlin, 26 February 2019:
On 20 March, the streetwork association Gangway e.V., in collaboration with the Berlin Juvenile Detention Centre, will open the exhibition ZwischenWelten – a collaborative project taking place both inside and outside the prison walls. In the Kunstkantine at FMP1, the multimedia exhibition presents the results of four sub-projects in which young people have explored what it means to live between worlds or in in-between worlds, to cope with uncertainty, to find new goals and to shape their own futures independently. ZwischenWelten focuses on low-threshold prevention of tendencies towards violence and radicalisation among young people with experiences of flight and migration, and among young prisoners. In creative workshops both inside and outside the prison walls, the tradition of storytelling is taken up as a medium for identity formation and reflection. This enables participants to engage with their past and themes such as home or identity on a very personal level. “The aim of the project is for participants to discover their stories, discuss them amongst themselves and then put them down on paper, each according to their abilities and interests, using art forms such as writing, film, graffiti, drawing, theatre or rap.
“In the final step, it is important that these thoughts and impressions are shared with an audience and that the young people receive feedback. This brings the process full circle,” says Birgit Lang (Head of the School Department at the Youth Detention Centre).
The exhibition in the FMP1 Art Canteen now presents selected works from the modules ‘Home’, ‘Dreams’, ‘Masks’ and ‘Identity’. It spans four rooms and includes, among other things, photographs, texts, illustrations, and audio and video installations. “Put down on paper, they tell of fears, worries, wishes and visions. The words become audible and call for an interlocutor, someone who listens, asks questions and responds.”
People who truly engage are always an asset.
